The Technology Resurgence

"Tech Street" is a term used in the financial markets to refer to the technology sector. The technology sector has changed radically since March 2000 (before the bear market began). In addition, the energy sector has created stocks in this part of the market that demonstrate the traits of technology.

There are a few different trains of thought when investing in technology; one which includes three main factors to keep in mind: 1. the "hockey stick", which describes a slow growth and a rapid increase like the handle of a hockey stick; 2. a "killer app", which is a software application that everyone "has to have"; and 3. sustainable high margins.

An increasingly popular alternative to traditional technology "hockey stick" growth is mature blue-chip growth; for instance, companies are focusing on line extensions instead of the rapid-fire small business growth of the nineties. Building strength in hardware to sell more software is much the same as building strength in cola to sell bottled water shelf space.

Technology stocks create wealth because the companies behind them have grown so quickly over the past few decades. Technology invariably creates rich new markets and explosive earnings growth for countless companies. The key to investing in technology stocks is diversification. With a significant amount of time and effort, a well-diversified portfolio can be established.
